AWAPUNI TRACKWORK Tuesday, July 2 By RON GURNEY Winter Cup nominee King Cougar was sharp in training once again at Awapuni on Tuesday morning. The majority of fast work took place on the plough (good), with just four gallops recorded on the No 1 grass (slow). King Cougar used the plough and had stable apprentice Danielle Hirini aboard over a smart 1000m in 1.1.7, the last 600 in 36.1, and he tackles the open 1400m at Marton on Saturday. The Alamosa gelding has had three runs back for three placings in a new campaign, the latest of which was a third at Otaki behind Red Sierra, another Winter Cup nominee, and Taurus. Platinum Rapper (3yo 1200m) and Johnny Lincoln (r72 1550m) were paired over 800m in 49.2, the last 600 in 36.7, and Platinum Rapper was third in the AG Challenge Stakes at Wanganui last start. This Thursday's Wanganui runner Sophia Magia (r65 f&m 1350m) and Marton debutant Here Comes Trouble (by Darci Brahma) took 50.2 and 36.9. Here Comes Trouble won over 850 metres at the Foxton trials recently. A Tavistock maiden trained by Mark Oulaghan ended with 600m in 37.7 and, soon after, Hypatia and an Alamosa-Elegant Emerald gelding, both trained by Mike Breslin, ran 800m in 51.7, the last 600 in 38.4. Saturday's Marton runners Sanctum and Kellys Inspiration (by Burgundy), both trained by Lisa Latta, covered 1000m in 1.9.6, the last 600 in 38.8. Sanctum, unplaced in two raceday outings so far, is in the maiden 1400m, and Kellys Inspiration debuts in the 2yo 1200m after a recent third at the Foxton trials (1000m). Dal Kilchoan (r65 2100m) worked particularly well over 1000m in 1.4.6, the last 600 in 39 even, while Port Lincoln, in at Wanganui on Thursday (mdn 1350m), and a Shamexpress gelding posted 1.9.7 and 39.6. Almo Costa and Light Up sprinted 600m in 39.5, and Passing Glance had a Super Easy filly for a partner over 800m in 55 even, the last 600 in 40.2. Dark Princess, who has not raced since finishing unplaced in the Herbie Dyke Stakes at Te Rapa in February, had an unknown stablemate for company over 800m in 56.1, the last 600 in 40.4. Marton runner Itellyouonething (r72 1550m) was not after time over 1000m in 1.12.9, the last 600 in 42.8. On the No 1 grass, former northerner Salt 'n' Pepper (mdn 1400m), who is now trained by Marieke Simons, ran 800m in 52.6, the last 600 in 36.9. She has not raced for over two years. Bruno Kelly was kept to 1000m in 1.12.6, the last 600 in 40.2, and Thursday's maiden debutant Empower (by No Excuse Needed) came up with 1.14.6 and 40.8. He was third at the Foxton trials recently. Last-start place-getter Derecho, who goes to Wanganui as well (mdn 3yo mile), was timed 800m in 57.7 and 43 even.
