AWAPUNI TRACKWORK Tuesday, Sprember 17 By RON GURNEY Shadows Cast left no doubts about his readiness for Group 1 racing at Hastings on Saturday when he galloped impressively at Awapuni this morning. Fast work took place on the course proper (dead-slow) and on the plough (good). Shadows Cast used the course proper and, with Tim Johnson aboard, warmed up from the 1200m mark to run 1000m in 1.5 even, the last 600 in 35.2. He drew plenty of attention for future spring assignments after his fourth in the Tarzino Trophy (1400m) three weeks ago, and the former Group 1 Thorndon Mile winner should hold no fears in Saturday's Windsor Park Plate at Hastings (1600m) Myrtle, (by Keeper), a dual winner last autumn, is ready to resume a new campaign judging by her 1000m in 1.7.7, the last 600 in 35.5. Heni tackles the open 1200m on Saturday and completed 1000m in 1.8.1, the last 600 in 36.2, identical times to her stablemates Jessiegee (open 1200m) and Almo Costa, who went together soon after. Jessiegee, a top performer last autumn, won a Foxton trial (1000m) last month, while Heni has taken great benefit from her a resuming run (unplaced) over 1400m at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton. Un-raced Falkirk three-year-old Durham Lad and an Alamosa gelding were paired over 1000m in 1.10 even, the last 600 in 36.8, and their stablemate Showshanelle, second on debut, went alone in 1.11.3 and 36 even. Un-raced Queen Kamada (by Rip Van Winkle), a recent Foxton trial winner, and a Zed filly covered 800m in 58.2, quickening to run the last 600 in 37.6. Queen Kamada, who will debut at Wanganui on Thursday, is with Anne Herbert, while the Zed filly is trained by Roydon Bergerson. A Nadeem mare trained by Mark Oulaghan was timed 1000m in 1.10.4, the last 600 in 38.5, and Thursday's Wanganui entrant Derecho (mdn 2040m) posted 1.11 even and 38.5. The latter's stablemate Empower (mdn 1200m) left 1000m behind in 1.11.8, the last 600 in 38.9, while Just Fabulous and Here Comes Trouble clocked 1.12.4 and 39.3. On the plough, Desert Magic sped over 800m in 48.9, the last 600 in 35.9, while Wanganui runner Father Lenihan (r82 mile) and Johnny Lincoln went together in 50.3 and 37.9. Makoura Lodge (mdn 2040m) gathered speed from the 1200m to run 1000m in 1.4.5, the last 600 in 38.5, while an El Hermano gelding third at the Foxton trials, and a No Excuse Needed mare ran 800m in 52.8 and 39 even. They are with Deborah Parry.
