AWAPUNI TRACKWORK Tuesday, January 7 By RON GURNEY Last-start Manawatu winner Kapinos showed he was poised to take that fine form to Wellington on Saturday when he galloped at Awapuni this morning. The majority of fast work was on the plough (good), with just one pair timed on the course proper (good). Kapinos, who scored on Eulogy Stakes day at Manawatu (r65 1200m), used the plough, and breezed over 1000m in 1.3 even, the last 600 in 36.6. He tackles the r72 1200m at Trentham, possibly with just four rivals. My Father's Gun, in the r65 1400m, ran a much better race last start and had Tim Johnson aboard this morning over 1000m in 1.7.3, the last 600 in 36.9. Last-start Boxing Day winner Lincoln Hills and Sir Nate, rivals in the r82 1400m, were paired over a smart 800m in 48.2, the last 600 in 36.3, while Colorado Star and a Rubick gelding sprinted 600m in 36.9. Colorado Miss, in at Wanganui on Thursday (r65 mile), stayed on terms with last-start Summer Cup (1600m) winner Beefeater over 1000m in 1.3.6, coming the final 800m in 50.2, the last 600 in 37.2. Beefeater is in Saturday's Anniversary Hcp (1600m) at Trentham. Tennielle Bishop-trained Explosive Roc, who was unplaced when resuming on Wanganui Cup day in November, ran 1000m in 1.7.4, the last 600 in 38.6. She returns to Wanganui on Thursday for another maiden 1340m. Prince Turbo and Hypatia, both in the r65 2100m at Trentham, did a quiet round and a half before galloping 800m in 53 even, the last 600 in 38.8. PrinceTurbo was narrowly beaten last start on the middle day at Manawatu. Anniversary Hcp entrant Jessiegee, third in the Summer Cup, and He's Done A Runner, runner-up the same day, stayed together over a nice 1000m in 1.5.7, coming the final 800m in 51.9, the last 600 in 38.3. He's Done A Runner (r65 1400m) goes to Trentham as well. Rex Royale and Platinum Spirit, likely rivals in the r2100m on Saturday, cruised over 1000m in 1.5.6, the last 600 in 39 even. They are both strong prospects for trainer Lisa Latta. An un-raced two-year-old Crantock (by Pentire) and a Power gelding, sprinted 600m in 40.8, while a Vespa filly and an Alamosa filly, two more trained by Mike Breslin, dashed 600m in 41.5. The Vespa filly is a two-year-old half-sister to Heni, who is now retired to stud. Wanganui entrant Soul Vacation (mdn mile No 2) did a round and a half before ending with a quiet 600m in 43.8, and stablemate Rox (mdn mile No 1) did similar work, the last 600 in 44.3. On the course proper, Wellington runners Semper Magico (r65 1400m) and Saltbush Bill r65 2100m), both last-start Otaki maiden winners for trainer Mark Oulaghan, covered 1000m in 1.5.5, the last 600 in 35.4. They are big chances again.
