IN Our Horses
Grand National Winners Steal The Show
By RON GURNEY | April 30, 2024

Last year's Grand National winners West Coast and Berry The Cash were in fine form at Awapuni on Tuesday morning.

The majority of fast work during a quiet gallop session was on the plough (good), with just three gallops recorded on the synthetic track.

Most horses timed were heading to either Woodville on Friday or the synthetic meeting at Awapuni on Sunday.

West Coast and Berry The Cash used the plough and, after a quiet round, were paired over an impressive 1000m in 1.1.4, the last 600 in 35.3.

Both horses have resumed racing, with West Coast, a maiden on the flat, showing his fitness by finishing a close fourth fresh up over 2200 metres at Waverley.

Berry The Cash finished a distant third in a jumpers' highweight (2200m) the same day.

Their maiden stablemates Shockiff and Miss Rosie also drew plenty of attention with 1000m in 1.1.7, the last 600 in 35.4.

Love Tania and Final Chapter were on terms throughout 1000m in 1.2.1, the last 600 in 35.7, and Midaswellbjack went alone in 1.3.4 and 35.1.

Good Craic and Lincoln Towers were sent 1000m in 1.2.4, the last 600 in 36 seconds even, while Smokin Mo clocked 1.2.8 and 36.2.

Keeping Time, fourth on debut two weeks ago, and unraced three-year-old filly Chelsea Rose gathered speed from the 1000m to run 800m in 49.6, the last 600 in 36.7. Chelsea Rose (by Sweynesse) has been placed at the trials and the jump-outs.

Rocking Light and Super Flash did a quiet round before galloping 1000m in 1.2.6, the last 600 in 37.6, and Jestin Case took 1.5.2 and 37.5 on her own. Hungry and Nun So Bad were kept to 1.10.5 and 39.9.

On the synthetic track, Hasbulla and unraced two-year-old filly Felucca were paired over 1000m in 1.6.1, the last 600 in 37.4. Felucca (by Time Test) has won a heat at the trials and the jump-outs.

Donnybrook and Showbastian Coe left 1000m behind in 1.5.7, the last 600 in 38.8, while Aranui Lass and Wal were kept to 800m in 56.1, the last 600 in 38.9.
