Oulaghan maidens and Sailor Jack impress
By RON GURNEY | April 09, 2024

Mark Oulaghan-trained maidens Shockiff and Dawn Shadow stole the show at Awapuni this morning, though Sailor Jack took plenty of kudos as well.

Fast work was held on the plough (good) or on the synthetic track, with the majority of horses timed scheduled to race at Woodville on Friday or Otaki on Saturday.

Shockiff and Dawn Shadow used the plough and cut out 1000m in a very smart 1.1.2, the last 600 in 35.3.

Shockiff won a trial in February and finished second fresh up at Wanganui, while her last two runs have been fair to say the least.

Dawn Shadow looks a big improver for Woodville on Friday after one resuming run at Otaki on Easter Monday.

Share Power, trained by Deborah Parry, and Hungry (Mike Breslin) were paired over a bold 1000m in 1.2.3, the last 600 in 35.2, and a Belardo gelding in the Bergerson stable sprinted 600m in 35.8.

Last-start winner Platinum Designs and Platinum Sixty Six were on terms throughout 1000m in 1.3.9, the last 600 in 36 seconds even, while Super Flash and Kentucky Boy took 1.3.8 and 36.7.

Lincoln's Kruz worked alone over 1000m in 1.4.2, the last 600 in 36.8, and Pinkerton, capable of a big run fresh up on Friday, ran 800m in 52.9 and 36.3.

Final Chapter was timed 1000m in 1.5.6, the last 600 in 37.7, followed soon after by Super Spirit and Dal Kilchoan in 1.5.8 and 37.8.

Platinum Cruiser, whose last-start effort is best forgotten, and unraced three-year-old filly Keeping Time covered 1000m in 1.7.1, the last 600 in 37.

Keeping Time (by Time Test) is a half-sister to Nod Of The Head and is expected to debut on Friday.

Fourty Eight left 1000m behind in 1.9.3, the last 600 in 38.9, while Kick Start and Smokin Mo ran the same distance, being timed from the 800m in 51.2, the last 600 in 38.1.

Colorado Star and Hot Dip were kept to 1000m in 1.8.7, the last 600 in 39.3, and Chikira Lass went alone over an easy 800m in 55.6 and 39.7.

On the synthetic track, Hawke’s Bay Cup (Otaki) entry Sailor Jack, ridden by co-trainer Hazel Schofer, did a quiet round before speeding up from the 1200m to run his final 1000m in an impressive 1.1.6, the last 600 in 35.4.

Voice Over and Starbilly went together over 1000m in 1.8 even, sprinting home the last 600 in 36.7.

Bryce Newman-trained two-year-old filly Velton, a distant third at Otaki last start, ran 800m in 52.2, the last 600 in 37.8, and her stablemates Uncle Arch and a Staphanos filly clocked 51 even and 38.2.

Hawke’s Bay Cup entry Zackery, chasing a hat-trick of wins on Saturday, was at a good clip early over 1000m in 1.5.1, easing to finish with 600 in 39.6.

Waiting (by Puissance de Lune) and Treat Yourself (by Savabeel) ran 800m in 56.1, the last 600 in 40.9, and they are unraced three-year-old fillies trained by Bryce Newman.
