Pepeha could be equal to the task
By RON GURNEY | May 31, 2022

Unraced two-year-old Pepeha is on song for a winning debut at black-type level after a pleasing semi-final trial at Awapuni this morning.

All fast work was held the reverse way on the heavy course proper after 24mm of rain over the previous 24 hours.

Pepeha (by Darci Brahma), trained by Mike Breslin, galloped with winning stablemate Soowin (by Sooboog) over 800m, the last 600 in 36.5.

Pepeha has solid jump-out form plus two easy Foxton trial wins up his sleeve, the latest of which was last Tuesday. His long-awaited debut will attract plenty of interest if he starts in Saturday's Castletown Stakes (1200m) at Wanganui.

Soowin has a win and a second on the board from three races so far, but blotted the copybook at Hawera last start. However, an inside draw that day did him no favours on a heavy track.

Their stablemates Colorado Star (wfa mile) and Cholula (r65 mile) covered 1200m in 1.26.4, sprinting home the last 600 in 38.5.

Waiirua Lad (mdn 1340m), unplaced on debut after a trial second, went with a filly by The Bold One over 800m, the last 600 in 38.7.

Bradman and Putorino were paired over 1200m in 1.19.4, the last 600 in

39 seconds even, while Canbiteabit (by Zed), who looks an improver, and a Mongolian Khan gelding ended 800m with 600 in 39.3.

Son Of Thunder, another who did not handle the conditions at Hawera last start, and a Showcasing-Siza Moya gelding ended 800m with 600 in 39.6. The Showcasing gelding won a Levin jump-out three weeks ago.

Uncle Charlie (by Alamosa), unplaced on debut, and unraced four-year-old The True Believer (by The Bold One) matched strides over 1200m in 1.24.2, the last 600 in 40.4.

The True Believer was placed at the jump-outs before winning a Foxton trial last Tuesday, and both horses were entered for Woodville, with The True Believer also in at Wanganui.

Platinum Bordeaux, a big improver for Woodville (r65 mile) after a resuming run at Trentham, ended 800m with 600 in 40 seconds even, while Nun So Bad, second at the trials last week, and Blackcomb (by

Telperion) finished with 40.9. They are in on Thursday as well Master Fin and a Jakkalberry maiden were timed 1200m in 1.23 even, the last 600 in 41.8, and Belardo Boy gathered speed from the 1200m (1.33.1), the last 600 in 41.7. He won a Foxton trial last Tuesday, and goes well fresh.

Atenartin and Showshanelle were on terms throughout 800m, the last 600 in 41.1, and Woodville entrant Dedoje recorded 42.6, with Amosia

(Woodville) clocking 42.9.

Tweedledee ran 1200m in 1.28.5, the last 600 in 42.7, while Get Up Jonezee and a Reset filly posted 1.30.3 and 43 even. West Coast took

1.32.2 and 43.7.

Sweetjineen and Queen Of Spades ended with 600m in 44.5, followed by Wotaripper (44.3), My Father's Gun and Pradasphere together (45.6), Busybeingfabulous and Dal Kilchoan together (46.6), and Wind In My Wings (46.7).
