Top mare ready for rich inaugural prize
By RON GURNEY | February 29, 2024

Awapuni trainer Roydon Bergerson could not be happier with Town Cryer, who tackles the $350,000 Rangitoto Classic at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The Tavistock mare galloped right-handed again on the synthetic track at Awapuni this morning, but was not chasing the clock, covering 1000m in 1.13.1, the last 600 in 40.4.

She worked far more boldly on Tuesday, much to Bergerson's satisfaction, and she promises to make her presence felt over the 1500 metres.

Best workers on the synthetic track this morning were Town Cryer's stablemates Reign It In and unraced two-year-old filly Turn It Up (by Tivaci), who went 1000m in 1.8.1, the last 600 in 35.9.

Goddess, another unraced filly, cruised over 800m in 52.5, the last 600 in 36.1. Trained by Lucy Tanner, she is a three-year-old by Proisir and won over 1000 metres at the Levin jump-outs last week.

An El Roca gelding and a Vespa gelding, both trained by Mike Breslin, were paired over 800m in 53.6, the last 600 in 39.4.

On the plough, Showbastian Coe and Pepeha turned on the speed to record a smart 800m in 47.2, the last 600 in 34 seconds even.

Former northerner Tavita Miss, who worked impressively alongside Town Cryer on Tuesday, drew attention again with her solo 1000m in 1.2.3, the last 600 in 37.6.

This maiden mare (by Tavistock) was unplaced in her first start for Roydon Bergerson at Tauherenikau (1300m) over New Year, but over-raced early before going forward to share a fast pace. She returns to Tauherenikau on Sunday (mdn f&m 1600m).

Last-start maiden winner Love Janie, in the r75 2050m on Sunday, had Coney Island for a partner over 1000m in 1.5.9, the last 600 in 37.4.

Love Janie had blinkers on for the first time at Wanganui and duly bolted in over 1600 metres. She will appreciate 2050 metres even more and holds a nomination for the NZ Oaks in two weeks time.

Coney Island (by Sacred Falls) has had three unplaced runs, but has not raced since May last year. He ran second in a Levin jump-out at the end of January and was third in a Foxton trial two weeks ago.

Platinum Cruiser and a Charm Spirit two-year-old colt ran 800m in 58.8, the last 600 in 40.1, while their stablemates Mainsail and Lynx were kept to 1000m in 1.11.2 and 41.4.

Mainsail is an unraced four-year-old by Reliable Man, and Lynx (by Rip Van Winkle) was unplaced in two starts last winter, but not been seen on race-day since.
