Town Cryer As Fit As Hands Can Make Her
By RON GURNEY | February 27, 2024

Wairarapa Breeders' Stakes winner Town Cryer is ready for the rich Rangitoto Classic at Ellerslie on Saturday judging by a very satisfactory gallop at Awapuni this morning. Fast work was held on the synthetic track or on the plough (good).

Town Cryer used the synthetic track and, with maiden mare Tavita Miss alongside, covered 1000m right-handed in 1.6.8, the last 600 in 37.3.

Tavita Miss (by Tavistock), formerly trained in the north, is now in the stable of Roydon Bergerson, who has given her just one race so far, being unplaced at Tauherenikau over New Year. She is expected to return there on Sunday.

Papa Surf, unraced three-year-old filly Gorgeous Grace (Alamosa-Heni) and unraced four-year-old mare Shirley Temple (by Vespa) sprinted 600m together in 39.4.

Reign It In left 800m behind in a casual 58.1, the last 600 in 41.3, while Ima Brazen One and Saxon Lady, both with Mike Breslin, took 59.5 and 41.4.

On the plough, Dawn Shadow and Rosemary Fizz, maiden fillies trained by Mark Oulaghan, caught the eye with their 800m in 48.7, the last 600 in 36.3.

Connello, third at Tauherenikau on Waitangi Day, and Platinum Privilege (by Santos) were paired over 800m in 52 seconds even, the last 600 in 36.9.

Lantern Way and Knickerless were timed 1000m in 1.6.6, the last 600 in 37.1, while Miyazawa and unraced three-year-old filly Sweet As Tavi (by Tavistock) recorded 1.8.1 and 37.8. Sweet As Tavi is a half-sister to Sergio.

The Scunner, unplaced on debut at Wanganui three weeks ago, had Kick Start for a partner over 1000m in 1.8.5, the last 600 in 38.5.

First Edition (by Wrote), another unplaced on debut at Wanganui, and unraced three-year-old Monsaraz (by Embellish) ran 1000m in 1.9.7, the last 600 in 40.5.

A Per Incanto filly and a Time Test filly, both trained by Mark Oulaghan, sprinted 600m in 40.1.
