Durham Lad the dark horse for Hastings
By RON GURNEY | September 06, 2022

Durham Lad and stablemate Barzetti highlighted a very quiet gallop session at Awapuni this morning.

Several horses were entered for the Levin jump-outs later in the day.

Fast work was held on the synthetic track or on the course proper.

Durham Lad and Barzetti used the synthetic track and were paired over 800m in 60.1, quickening to complete the last 600 in 40.3.

Durham Lad won the $50,000 Autumn Sprint Championship (1200m) at Trentham in May, but was unplaced at his next start (Hastings) before getting a breather.

He won a Levin jump-out last month and has made solid progress in time for the big meeting at Hastings this Saturday (r75 1200m). He scored at long odds at the same carnival last year.

Barzetti had two placings at the jump-outs before resuming at Awapuni two weeks ago, and was well supported. He could finish only fifth, but has trained on well.

Sequoia Dawn, unplaced in two resuming runs so far, covered 1000m in 1.14.6, coming the final 800m in 57.7, the last 600 in 41.4.

On the course proper, Nod Of The Head continued his spring preparation with 800m in 53.6, the last 600 in 39 seconds even, while Sotirio and stablemate Balalaika went together in 57.1, the last 600 in 39.7.

Sotirio, in Saturday's Listed El Roca-Sir Colin Meads Trophy (1200m) at Hastings, scored a game win on debut at Awapuni two weeks ago, and Balalaika was beaten a nose the same day.

She is in Saturday's r65 1300m.
