Lincoln's Kruz Sounds A Fair Warning
By RON GURNEY | January 11, 2024

Lincoln's Kruz put his hand up to be counted for the Telegraph Handicap on Saturday when he galloped impressively again at Awapuni this morning.

Fast work was on the plough or on the synthetic track.

Lincoln's Kruz used the plough and sped over 800m in 47.1, the last 600 in 34.3. He ran similar times working with Belclare on Tuesday.

The seven-year-old has a record of two wins and a second at Trentham and will reunite with jockey Jonathan Riddell, who has chalked up two previous wins on the horse.

Maiden four-year-old Jack Morrison (by Darci Brahma) caught the eye today with 1000m in 1.4.1, the last 600 in 36.7. He was unplaced on debut at Otaki last week and not disgraced after over-racing three wide in the open.

Maiden five-year-old Asahi (by Savabeel), who has not raced since the autumn, sprinted 600m in 36.5.

Wellington entrant Cheval de Foudre (r65 mile) and unraced four-year-old mare Our Matilda (by Quorum) ran 800m in 50 seconds even, the last 600 in 37.1. Cheval de Foudre was unlucky not to pay a dividend at Otaki last week.

Craftsman (by Alamosa) and Hips Don't Lie (by Mongolian Khan), an unraced pair trained by Mike Breslin, covered 800m in 51.9, the last 600 in 37.1.

Their stablemates Call A Friend and Hot Dip were on terms throughout 800m in 53.3, the last 600 in 38.5, and they have been freshened for new campaigns.

Showbastian Coe, in at Trentham (r65 1000m) after an unplaced resuming run at Otaki on Boxing Day, recorded 54.1 and 38.8.

Gorgeous Grace (Alamosa-Heni) and a Darci Brahma gelding, were sent 800m in a quiet 57.2, the last 600 in 39.4, while their stablemates Raffle and Parisian Poppy took 57.1 and 40.6.

Wellington runners Crouch (r75 2200m) and Colorado Star (Trentham Stakes) were kept to 800m in 58.7, the last 600 in 43 seconds even, and Pepeha, in similar work, ended with 600m in 43.1. Donnybrook (r75 1400m) posted 44.1.

On the synthetic track, Sparta and Velton (by Headwater) from the Bryce Newman stable were paired over a 600m sprint in 36.3.

Sindacato, in Saturday's Anniversary Handicap, was timed 1000m in 1.5.5, coming in from the 800m in 51.2, the last 600 in 37 seconds even. Lisa Allpress has ridden him at the trials, but takes the mount on race day for the first time.

The gelding's stablemate and race rival Town Cryer was also sent 1000m, covering it in 1.9.8, with the final 800m taking 52.2, the last 600 in 38.5.

Opie Bosson has the ride again after finishing second on the mare in the Taupo Cup two weeks ago.

Bradman (r75 1400m) had Charlotte's Way alongside over 1000m in 1.6.5, coming the final 800m in 51.7, the last 600 in 39.3.

Bradman looks a big improver after his resuming fourth at Otaki on Boxing Day, and Awapuni apprentice Jim Chung is back aboard on Saturday, claiming 3kg.

Anniversary Handicap race rivals and stablemates Love For All and Sugah Sweet galloped separately, but did the same work. Love For All sprinted 600m in 40.5, while Sugah Sweet took 42.6.
